Clinical Pilates for Lymphoedema
Movement and stretching is important for any person experiencing lymphoedema. The lymphatic system relies on the movement of muscle to act as a ‘pump’ to move lymphatic fluid. Stretching with whole body movements can improve the mobility of the fascia that connects the whole body to ALLOW the lymph to flow freely. The fascia can be restricted due to many reasons including poor posture, scarring from surgery, or damage from radiotherapy. Pilates can help promote efficient movement to keep the fascia healthy and improve normal movement patterns. It also provides a great general feeling of wellbeing, boosts energy and is good fun!
Lymphoedema can significantly affect movement, mobility and balance. If we have been carrying around a heavy limb for years, then it can be more difficult to move, not only due to the weight of the limb but also due to the restriction in joint range of movement. This means some muscles have to work harder becoming tighter and shorter; some muscles may lengthen and weaken causing a muscle imbalance. Improving posture and strength with Pilates will minimise the strain on the body caused by this muscle imbalance.
These specialist Pilates sessions are designed by Kim, our lymphoedema physiotherapist, as a stepping stone to help people with lymphoedema feel confident to transition into our other wellbeing classes or resume other forms exercise.
